Drummies need kit as they march to nationals
It may be discouraging to see other schools in their uniforms and props but we won't let it deter us from the main goal.
THE spirit and dedication of the Mowat Park Girls High drum majorettes has seen them soar to the top, regardless of any hurdles they face.
Drummies used to be the sport to beat at Mowat Park High back in the day, with the girls smartly dressed in their uniforms as they took to the grounds, performing their expertly synchronised routines. But it slowly died down over the years as it became just a fond memory of the school’s history.
A few years down the line, however, the high-spirited sport was resurrected in 2015, thanks to a group of girls who showed great dedication and love for the sport. Coached by well-known former drummie, Tarryn Dressing, the drummies team which started with 40 girls and grew to 105 girls, have turned out some disciplined and passionate sportswomen as they continue to develop as individuals and teammates.
Last Saturday, the school hosted its first drummies competition with both high schools and primary schools from around Durban competing. Mowat Park drummies took second position, beating some of the top schools.
But getting to the top is not easy, especially when the girls are working with very few props and don’t have proper uniforms. “Our coach is amazing and she tries her best to supply us with the props and uniforms but we can’t expect her to carry us all the time. We have tried fundraising but it’s a battle,” said team leader, Zanele Mthembu.
Despite their shortcomings, the drummies never let it stop them. “We always strive to be the best. It may be discouraging to see other schools in their uniforms and props but we won’t let it deter us from the main goal. We are a team and we are always excited about competing,” said teammate, Blessing Mare. “It helps that we have such a dedicated and experienced coach who taught us about ‘sameness’ – Same thing, same way at the same time.”
The drummies team encourages new members as they accept anyone who is willing to learn. New girl, Bande Shezi said the first time she joined, they accepted her with open arms. “I learn alot from the senior drummies and they make me feel welcome and give me endless support and love. I did drummies in primary school so I was excited to find out that Mowat Park had a team too,” she said.
The sport has given the girls newfound confidence and have taught them many life lessons such as discipline, commitment and balance. “It’s so addictive and you will notice a major change in your attitude towards everything. It’s a great way to build your self-confidence and esteem,” said Gumede.
The girls will head off to nationals in June and their biggest dream is to have matching uniforms and new props. “It will boost my team’s morale. It is important for my teammates to look like a proper team. Not only are we representing us but we are representing Mowat Park and Montclair, so we appeal to anyone who can assist us to please help us, we will not let you down,” added Mare.
