Bluff loses out as 2022 Commonwealth Games revoked

No shooting competition on the Bluff.

DURBAN will no longer host the 2022 Commonwealth Games because the necessary obligations to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) could not be met, meaning a loss in potential tourism and economic value for the Bluff and the wider city.

The Bluff was earmarked as the site of the shooting competition for the 2022 Games. Shooting ranges were going to be built on the Bluff headland at the military base. This would have meant gains for local accommodation, entertainment and sporting facilities.

Following a review by the CGF, it was announced this week that South Africa’s hosting duties would be revoked.

“It is with disappointment that the detailed review has concluded that there is a significant departure from the undertakings provided in Durban’s bid and as a result a number of key obligations and commitments in areas such as governance, venues, funding and risk management/assurance have not been met under the revised proposition,” read a statement from CGF.

“In line with the mandate from members at the 2016 General Assembly, the CGF is actively exploring alternative options, including a potential replacement host.

The CGF will continue to have an open dialogue with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the Republic of South Africa and remains committed to realising the shared ambitions of a future Commonwealth Games in Africa.

The CGF is fully confident and committed to delivering a successful Commonwealth Games for athletes and fans in 2022,” said CGF president, Louise Martin CBE.

SA minister of sport and recreation, Fikile Mbalula will make a statement on the revocation of the city’s rights to host the Games at 11am today.
