SDCEA to develop cancer support group for South Durban

Everyone is welcome to join.

THOSE affected by cancer in the South Durban area are invited to join a cancer support group, hosted by the South Durban community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA).

“SDCEA will host a meeting to develop a cancer support group for the residents of South Durban, which is also known as ‘Cancer Valley’. These meetings will be in three different communities: Wentworth, Merebank and Bluff,” said SDCEA environmental project officer, Noluthando Mbeje.

Due to the profusion of industry and noxious chemicals in the vicinity, SDCEA hopes to provide support to those suffering ill health.

“The South Durban communities continue to find themselves choking on noxious fumes, suffering pollution-related illness, and rapidly deteriorating neighbourhoods. This environment has such negative health impacts resulting in conditions like asthma, cancer and respiratory-related diseases.

The objective of forming a cancer support group is to help the sufferers and provide the necessary guidance and advice to those people affected by these diseases. Those people affected directly and indirectly will need to be part of a support structure where they can share what they are going through and also get professional advice and assistance in the process.

These meetings are meant for cancer patients, cancer survivors, family, friends and caregivers.”
