Bulletproof vests to aid COP

Their lives are in real danger and they need these vests.

FOR the volunteers who risk their lives to protect the Bluff, a much-needed supply of bulletproof vests will aid the Community Orientated Policing (COP) in their endeavours.

The two units, the reaction unit and rapid response unit, comprising more than 25 people, will be protected, thanks to new bulletproof vests.

“These bulletproof vests are the best money could buy and are valued at R75,000,” said COP manager, Rake Jeeves.

“Thanks to the Hancock family, Bluff Meat Supply and other sponsors for these vests. We plan to expand the units further and anyone willing to step in and assist, through sponsorship or other ways, please contact me.

The units have had a massive impact on the crime rate and the team works closely with SAPS and Blue Security.

Their lives are in real danger and they need these vests. They are made of lightweight material, which makes it easier for the members to do their job while keeping them safe,” he added.

While both units do the same job, the reaction unit is made of 20 members who work at night because they have full time jobs, while there are plans to hire the volunteers in the rapid response unit full time unit once funds raised.

According to Jeeves, since its formation nine months the reaction unit has made 23 arrests and the controller, who currently monitors the calls at night is expected to available 24-hours-a-day soon.
