Looters lift alcohol from N2 crash scene

MOTORISTS have taken advantage of a crashed vehicle carrying alcohol on the N2 southbound.
Crates of beers were seen being carried off by motorists and passers-by from a truck which rolled onto it’s side, leaving left three people injured today (20 February).
The accident did not seem to faze the looters as they carried off the alcohol. Montclair SAPS communication officer, Cpt Dereck Vijiam said looting is a common sight and it very rare that the looters get arrested because it is hard for owners to pinpoint them.
“Although many people think it is okay to loot, it is still considered theft. They do it all the time,” he said. “Rarely do they think of the injured inside the vehicle but more of what they can gain from the load.”
“It is hard for owners to report this especially when there are hundreds of people involved in the looting. I don’t encourage this behaviour, esepcially when there are people hurt in the crash. In some cases there are arrests but the looters will get off with a warning or a slap on the wrist.”
