Court overturns Bluff school principal’s appointment

The court found in favour of the governing body.

THE furore over the appointment of Glenardle Junior Primary’s principal last year came to a head on Monday, 20 February when Judge Kruger found in favour of the school’s governing body.

The decision was made in the Durban High Court, after an application was made by the school governing body last year to contest the department of education’s appointment of Priscilla Bedesi as school principal in February.

According to a letter sent to parents at the time by the governing body, Miss Bedesi’s appointment was not recommended nor ratified by them.

The governing body and KZN department of education were at loggerheads, with the governing body citing irregularities in the appointment, while the department of education insisted due process had been followed.

In court, Judge Kruger found in favour of the governing body and granted a cost order against the five respondents, the MEC for basic education; the HOD for basic education; the district director for Umlazi, and two others from the district department of education.

The judge also declared that the appointment of the principal should be set aside.

Until such time as the governing body is able to advertise for, interview and put forward a suitable candidate, Miss Bedesi will remain as interim acting principal, according to the court’s findings.
