MEC condemns Bluff policeman’s killing

Meanwhile, an outpouring of support has been shown on Facebook.

KZN MEC for transport, community safety and liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, has strongly condemned the killing of a Brighton Beach police officer.

While leading crime prevention operations at about 9pm on Tuesday, 14 February, Brighton Beach SAPS officers were alerted to a robbery in progress at a petrol station on Solomon Mahlangu Drive (Edwin Swales VC).

When they approached the petrol station, the robbers fled and the police pursued them. During the chase, a 37-year-old officer was shot and killed.

One man was arrested and charged with robbery and murder, while police are still searching for the other men who stole cash and cigarettes from the petrol station. A 9mm pistol found on the scene is suspected to belong to one of the suspects.

“It is sad that we have lost yet another police officer in the police force which is hugely understaffed. This is a serious setback in our fight against crime and criminality. Police, in partnership with communities, are on the frontline of the battle against crime. We strongly condemn this act and hope those responsible will soon face the full might of the law,” said MEC Kaunda.

A request for information from Brighton Beach SAPS was unanswered at the time of the article.
