Miss SA finalist runs her own race

I would like to change the stigma of beauty pageants. Women can be beautiful and powerful."

IT has been quite the journey for Yellowwood Park beauty, Priyeshka Lutchman who is now one of the finalists for Miss SA.

Battling it out with 26 other semi-finalists, Lutchman rose to the top to grab one of the 12 final spots. “It’s been an amazing journey. It was everything I expected and more.

I have learned so much about myself and the competition. The sisterhood with my fellow contestants is definitely one to cherish- they have made this journey truly a memorable one,” she said.

Through out the semi-finals each contestant work hard to prove themselves worthy of the cut. “The judges expressed their difficulty in choosing their top 12 on many occasions, as it was such a strong bunch of girls. Now that I am in the finals, I have to work even harder to prepare for the final night and yes I’m having the time of my life in between it all.” she said.

The Miss SA experience has bee life changing for the Yellowwood Park resident. She is now more confident and happier with her growth as a person.

“I look back from when I entered until now. I am more confident in so many ways, I actually feel the change in my persona and I couldn’t be happier,” she said.

In a bid to constantly improve herself , she pushes and challenges herself to new limits. “I put alot of effort into everything I do, physically and emotionally and I believe that’s how I made it to where I am now. Oh, and the bikini body of course,” she joked.

Her favourite moment as a Miss SA finalist is meeting people of influence at glamorous events and learning from them. “My ultimate moment was visiting Robben Island with the girls. It was an emotional but powerful experience, it’s so important to remember the struggle our people went through to get us where we are now,” added Lutchman.

She urges her supporters to continue supporting her as she now reaches the final stage of the competition where she is striving to prove herself a worthy opponent.

“I may have entered a beauty pageant but I’m not just a pretty face.

I want people to see the real me, the me who is thoughtful, focused, quirky and funny. I want to challenge myself and my youth to make a meaningful difference in our country. As women we are constantly trying to prove ourselves in society and being apart of a pageant, I would like to change the stigma of beauty pageants. Women can be beautiful and powerful.”

She advises young women to remember competition is to never compare yourself to anyone else. “You are your own person, remain true to yourself and your beliefs and compete with yourself only. I’ve learnt to run my own race.”
