UPDATE: Ward 64 cllr calls for calm in the wake of Montclair shooting

Cllr Hegter commends Montclair SAPS for the speedy response to the incident

WARD 64  (Montclair and Woodlands) councillor, Gavin Hegter urges residents of Montclair not to panic following the shooting at the corner of Kenyon Howden and Montclair Roads this morning (8, February)

Cllr Hegter was at Montclair Park when the drama unfolded in the road below him. “I was doing inspection work at the park when we heard a few rounds of gunshots. We looked down and saw the bakkie roll across the intersection and then we saw two men jump into a vehicle before driving off,” he said.

He speculated about the shooting being taxi-related but he couldn’t confirm it at present. “I ask people to allow the police to do their investigation. This was an unfortunate incident and I send my condolences to the victim’s family,” he added.

Montclair residents took to social media to air their views on crime but one reader asks others to use this as a way to unite the community and encourage everyone to look out for each other. ” I have lived in this area all my life. We have lovely neighbours who look out for one another. Unfortunately bad elements come from outside to ruin our peace and quiet. said Janine Ferguson on Facebook page, Yellowwood Park Community Chat.

“The general populace of Montclair are really great people. Some of us have lived here for over 50 years and have seen all the ups and downs. I still regard it as a lovely family area as we have great schools, numerous churches, a decent mall, beauty salons, vets and doctors. The responsibility to make sure it stays good is the responsibility of each and every one of us. Report crime, help each other and not sit back, criticize and expect everybody else to do something about it. I think it is long overdue that the community unite.”Cllr Hegter commends Montclair SAPS for the speedy response to the incident as well as their quick reaction into cordoning and handling the scene.
