Post office branch rescues wayward kitten

A WEEK long hunt for a kitten in the roof of the Jacobs Post Office ended in joy as the animal was found and rehomed.

“Post office branches normally echo to the sound of date-stamps, but when the Jacobs Post Office opened on Monday, 28 November employees heard pitiful meowing coming from the roof,” said the SA Post Office communications division’s Johan Kruger.

A kitten had crawled into the roof and could not get out. The staff tried to entice the young animal but their many attempts were unsuccessful.

“I eventually opened an air-conditioning ventilator and put some milk into the ceiling,” said branch manager, Sizwe Zulu.

Cat food brought in by staff member, Charmaine Thiart was also placed in the ceiling to keep the kitten feed.

On Friday, 9 December, a customer saw the terrified kitten peeking out from a ventilator and Sifiso Mkhize was finally able to rescue him.

“The kitten was tiny. He was crying from Monday morning when we came to work and the employees were very worried that it may die in the ceiling and they did everything to try to save the kitten’s life,” said Johan.

The story ended happily with the kitten finding a home where he is loved.
