Estranged boyfriend shoots, kills woman (27)

THROUGH determined policework, a man was quickly arrested for the shooting of a woman on South Coast Road on Tuesday, 29 November.

The 27-year-old woman, who had just finished work, was walking to her car at about 5pm, when her estranged boyfriend allegedly drove up.

“She noticed him and attempted to escape by running up the staircase, upon which he pointed a firearm and allegedly fired five shots in her direction. One round entered her forearm, one the chest area, and one the head. She tumbled down the staircase and was declared deceased at the scene by paramedics. The cause of death was determined as a perforating gunshot wound to the head,” said Brighton Beach SAPS media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

According to police, the man dropped the gun, which had its serial number filed before he fled. The vehicle he escaped in was found in Croftdene by the eThekwini Inner South Cluster task team.

An eyewitness and CCTV footage provided the police with information on the shooter and Brighton Beach SAPS’ Sergeant Robert Jooste and provincial task team’s Warrant Officer Ricky Radiah worked to track him down.

Police networks suggested he was seen in a Chatsworth Mall, but police were unable to find him there.

More information came through about a street where he might live. The officers sat in wait on the street in an unmarked car and were rewarded when, at about 11pm, they saw him walking by.

“Upon seeing the two police officers approaching him, he confirmed he knew why they had come to arrest him. He was read his rights and placed under arrest.

The 31-year-old man from Chatsworth was charged with premeditated murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.

Brighton Beach SAPS station commissioner, Colonel Carel Grobler commended W/O Radiah and Sgt Jooste on applying their networking skills, and their determination to track and trace the estranged boyfriend.”
