Business alert follows robberies

FOLLOWING a recent armed robbery on Tara Road, a local security company urges business owners to be alert.

Sunday, 13 November saw a number of armed robberies throughout Durban, including one on the Bluff.

According to Blue Security operations manager, Brian Jackson, five armed robbers ambushed a woman as she opened a shop at about 9am.

“The gang held her up at gunpoint and forced staff to lie down on the floor. They fled the scene with jewellery,” he said.

That same day, armed men beset businesses in Pinetown and Sea Cow Lake too, making off with cash, mobile phones and jewellery.

“Criminals often spend time staking out their victims before striking, so it’s important to be security conscious and to report any suspicious activity. Be aware of your surroundings when opening up and closing the business in the evening because these are prime times for robberies.

There have also been several incidents recently where criminals have followed victims from the bank back to businesses or homes and robbed them of large sums of cash.

With the Christmas season approaching we advise business owners to rather use electronic fund transfers to pay suppliers and staff. Employees are also advised to be careful at ATMs and at banks and to avoid carrying large sums of cash as far as possible,” said Jackson.
