Animal cruelty accused gets R6,000 fine

A MAN was found guilty of animal cruelty and fined R6,000 thanks to the persistence of the Durban and Coast SPCA.

The case of cruelty opened in January and on Wednesday, 23 November the man was found guilty and given a fine of R6,000, half of which was suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of a similar offence, or 12 months in prison. He is also not allowed to own an animal for five years.

“It was a victory for our inspectorate manager, Candice Sadayan, who worked long and hard – liaising with the SAPS investigating officer and prosecutors, and appearing several times in the Verulam Court – in order to get justice for the animal in question,” said Durban and Coast SPCA income development and communications manager, Lindsey Concer.

The dog had been taken to the Phoenix branch for euthanasia by the owner’s son. According to Concer, it had severe injuries to its face with a large, deep infected wound.

“The wound had become infected and was crawling with maggots, indicating it had been like that for some time without any kind of veterinary treatment. The receptionist brought the injury to the attention of our veterinarian and inspectorate and the owner was charged with neglect and failure to render adequate veterinary treatment.”

Due to the extent of the dog’s injuries, it had to euthanased.

“We feel relieved that a strong message of censure has been sent, that will hopefully let this man and others know that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated.”
