I plead with motorists to be careful and try not to speed. Think of the children.

UPDATE: Councillor mourns death of Tara Road crash victims

While three people were hospitalised from the other vehicle, one of those injured succumbed to his injuries later in the afternoon, bringing the death toll to three so far.

Prayers and well wishes have flooded social media as the Bluff and Wentworth community reel in shock at the senseless deaths. Expressions of shock and commiserations with the families have been followed by calls for the installation of speed-calming measures, including speed humps.

Residents voiced their concerns about the dangers posed by the lack of speed humps in what is a major arterial route through the Merewent and Bluff areas, especially since several schools dot the length of Tara Road.

Principal of Fairvale Secondary, Dale Seidle said his school is in mourning. Having lost one of their own in the accident has traumatised the pupils. “When the children heard the collision, they all ran down. At that time we didn’t know there was a Fairvale pupil involved. It was very upsetting when we learned of the 16-year-old grade 11 pupil who lost his life. He had just finished his exams that same day.”

Seidle urged motorists to exercise caution when using Tara Road and to be considerate of the pupils and other pedestrians who use the road. Mr Seidle said any measures to reduce motorists’ speed on Tara Road will be appreciated.

“We have never had an accident of this magnitude on this stretch of Tara Road but many cars have lost control and crashed into our school gate or fence. I plead with motorists to be careful and try not to speed. Think of the children,” he said.

Councillor Aubrey Snyman said he will be in talks with the eThekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) to persuade them to assist him with measures to reduce the speed on Tara Road but he urges drivers to take responsibility. “The speed limit on Tara Road is 60km/h and it is also a residential area. We should not have situation where people are disobeying the law. We need to go to the source of the issue and urge people to abide to the law of the road. It is not right that innocent people have to lose their lives or get hurt for the community to say we need to take a stand.”Wentworth resident, Christopher Linderboom said speed humps are overdue in Tara Road. “Our school children face the danger every day. Speed humps will also limit the threat posed by heavy-duty trucks that use that road and force speed freaks to slow down.”
