UPDATE: Councillor mourns death of Tara Road crash victims

Calls for respect for road rules, amid concerns about speeding being a factor

HEARTBROKEN by this morning’s fatal Tara Road accident, Wentworth ward councillor Aubrey Snyman sends a message to motorists to be careful on the roads and to obey the rules of the road.

This follows the fatal accident near Fairvale Secondary, which claimed the lives of two men, aged 16 and 22, at about 11.30am.

Another three people travelling in a separate vehicle have been hospitalised. One is in a critical condition. It has been alleged that one car was attempting to overtake a security van when it struck another in the oncoming lane, head-on.

Cllr Snyman, who was at the scene, said the aftermath of the vehicle wreckage indicates that speed may have been a factor.

“It’s very sad and something needs to be done about this speeding in the community. Many lives are lost because of this and I urge drivers to respect the road, respect road users and be responsible, especially now in the approach to the festive season,” said Cllr Snyman.

He sent condolences and his deepest sympathies to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery to the three people recovering in hospital.

Advanced life support paramedic, Ceron Lennox from Rescue Care said one of the men was already dead when paramedics arrived, and attempts to revive the other person were unsuccessful. “He went into cardiac arrest and paramedics’ attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was declared deceased at the scene.” Both the deceased men were travelling in a red Golf.

The three survivors were entrapped in the wreckage and had to be cut free by Durban fire department officials.

Tara Road was closed to traffic while police responded to the scene. However, it has been re-opened.
