Elect your ward committee this Sunday

Ward committees is a structure that works with the ward councillor to improve service delivery

ELECTIONS for ward committee will take place on Sunday, 20 November across eThekwini Municipality but it seems not many residents understand what this structure entails.

The ward committee is a structure that works with the ward councillor to improve service delivery and identify issues in each city’s wards. It consists of 10 residents of the ward and should be representative of the geographical areas of the ward as well as the various interest groups such as seniors, religions, education, vulnerable groups, crime, ratepayers and civic associations. The Municipality offers training for ward committee members so they know their rights, authority and access to services.

According to the South African Government News Agency (SA News), ward committees are important in fostering relations between ward councillors and key stakeholders at ward level, such as traditional councils and community development workers.
