Matrics of 2016: Think safety first at parties

Matriculants are urged to not neglect their personal safety

IT IS nearing that time again when matriculants will want to blow off steam after a stressful and tough year.

Celebration is in order as exams come to a close and big parties and festivals are planned across KZN. But matriculants are urged to not neglect their personal safety while having fun.ADT Security. District manager for KZN, Ivan Govender said, ““Our grade 12 pupils and their families have worked long and hard to get to this point, and we wish them all the best during the tough examination process. However, the immense sense of relief when the exams are finished does not mean that one can forget basic common sense when it comes to your own safety.”

Safety measures should be practised and remembered when the matrics are celebrating the end of their high school career:

  • Before leaving your accommodation for the day or night, ensure that anything valuable is locked away in a drawer or safe.
  • Never carry large amounts of cash or go out wearing flashy or expensive jewellery.
  • If your accommodation is a holiday house or apartment, make sure all the doors are locked, the windows are properly shut and that the alarm is activated if a system is installed.
  • When out at different events and activities, be aware of your surroundings and arrange with your friends to keep an eye on each other’s belongings.
  • If you are approached by a suspicious individual; walk away and report it to the closest security or to the police.

When it is time to return to your accommodation after a night out:

  • Never leave without your friends.
  • Do not accept a lift from a stranger; rather use transport provided by the event organisers.
  • Driving after a few drinks is never an option. Call a cab or use event shuttles if they are available instead.

Govender calls on parents to share these tips with their children regardless of where they will be celebrating the end of the exams.
