Three arrested in shoot-out

A SHOOT-OUT with police in Merebank ended in the arrest of three gunmen on at about 9pm Tuesday night, 1 November.

Wentworth SAPS together with Montclair crime prevention members arrested the trio aged between 22 and 38 for attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Wentworth SAPS were stopped by a security guard while patrolling in Merebank. He told them of five suspicious-looking men near KFC in Raj Mahal Road.

When the officers drove towards the food outlet, they noticed the identified men stopped next to them. Spotting the police van, they all fled in different directions. They were ordered to stop by police but continued to run and started shooting at the officers. Police returned a warning shot and collared one suspect. Back-up was called and two other men were caught and arrested.
The trio will appear in court on Friday, 4 November at the Durban magistrates court.The KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, praised Wentworth SAPS and Montclair crime prevention for their brilliant work. “We appreciate the security guard who informed the police about the suspects. We will continue to work together and fight crime in our society,” he said.
