Habitual robber bagged on Bluff

While potentially searching for another victim the man was spotted.

A WANTED thief surveying a potential target on the Bluff was arrested on Sunday, 23 October.

While on patrol on Brighton Road, ET Rapid Response reaction unit officer, Kevin Zietsman noticed a man acting suspiciously.

As he patrolled, he doubled back to the man and found him watching a business premises, according to Brighton Beach SAPS media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

It was then that the officer recognised him from a photo circulated by the Flying Squad.

Zietsman contacted the Flying Squad’s Constable Ralph Ogle, who joined him at the scene and confirmed the man’s identity.

They followed him to the corner of Brighton Road and Voortrekker Street where the 36-year-old was surrounded and arrested by Cst Ogle.

The man, who had only been released from prison in March following a three-year sentence for common robbery, was linked to two cases of common robbery this month in Tara Road. During one of the robberies, he assaulted a victim.

He appeared in Durban regional court on Tuesday, 25 October and was remanded to Westville prison.

“Brighton Beach SAPS management commends Kevin Zietsman for the vigilance he showed in identifying the man sought by Brighton Beach detective services. We also commend the partnership between SAPS Flying Squad’s Cst Ogle, who had circulated the image of the man and for the arrest effected by the pair.

Once again the police’s networking capabilities with roleplayers whose aim is to combat crime has produced positive results,” said Capt Le Roux.
