Sculptor activist shares enviro message with pre-school

"We know the world is in trouble so why not start now? Claim back your Earth now." - Andries Botha

SCULPTOR and rhino activist, Andries Botha visited Woodhaven Pre-Primary School on Wednesday night, 19 October to address parents and teachers about the plight of rhinos.

Parents were encouraged to take the information given to them and impart it with their children.

We are giving birth to children every day but what kind of world are we leaving them?

In a passionate presentation entitled Rhino Burning, Botha explained if humans continue their destructive path, nothing will be left for their children and future generations. “We started to develop an advocacy in awareness of rhino and environmental issues as well as the misuse of fossil fuels. As humans, we have an astronomical impact on the natural habitat. What we are trying to emphasize through education is that we have to give back to Earth and make it better, we need to heal nature. We cannot continue to live like this as there is a real chance we might see the extinction of rhinos,” exclaimed Botha.

He challenged parents and teachers to be the change by instilling in children the importance of nature and wildlife on our own existence. “We have to ask ourselves, apart from co-habiting this Earth, what else have we done to improve it, to keep it safe? We can’t escape the fact that we live in an ecosystem. We are giving birth to children every day but what kind of world are we leaving them?I want parents and teachers to teach these young children about this wonderful world of nature we have the honour of living in. Let’s not destroy it,” added Andries.

The engaging presentation had many parents thinking about the future, a strong message he hopes they took home with them. “We know the world is in trouble so why not start now? Claim back your Earth now,” concluded Botha.

Woodhaven Pre-Primary thanked Botha and the team from Rhino Burning as well as the parents who attended. The pre-primary pupils decorated the room with artworks of rhinos and one special artwork from Glenwood Boys High pupil, Msizi Sibiya (14) who presented his clay work entitled Save the Rhino. “Our animals will not last forever if we continue to hurt them, we need to preserve this beautiful creation entrusted to us by nature,” said the wise 14-year-old.
