Explosions heard near Bluff military base

The ground reverberated with each bang

BLUFFITES took to social media in a panic this evening as loud bangs were heard emanating from the southern peninsula.

Shortly after 7.30pm an explosive sound was heard as far afield as Olsen Road. This was followed in quick succession by another two and three or four more over the next 20 minutes.
Concerned residents took to Facebook to query the source of the sounds.

Those living in proximity to the Bluff army base said they had heard the sounds coming from the base. Several people confirmed sighting a helicopter circling the vicinity of the military facility.

“We were sitting watching TV when a loud bang shook our home. It even made my light flicker. When I went outside, I heard a second ‘bang’ coming from the south. The ground reverberated with each bang,” said one Bluffite.

On Gatvol Bluff, a Facebook group, residents said not only were they worried about the noises but their dogs were frightened too.

There was no official notification of what some have indicated may be a training exercise.
Comment from a Bluff army base spokesman is being sought by Southlands Sun, and this story will be updated as soon as it is received.
