Aussie trip in sight for Montclair’s ‘Golden boy’

"It's a humbling moment for me. It goes to show through hard work, dedication and having a set goal in mind, anything is possible."

MONTCLAIR’s golden boy, Matt Glasspool is off to another worldly destination thanks to his national winning speech at St Mary’s School in Kloof on Tuesday, 4 October.

The teenager hopes to make the trip to Australia to compete in the 2017 World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships in April. The current DYC mayor and top achieving pupil at Glenwood High School excelled in all categories during the competition, ensuring him first place. “It was a goal I have set for myself but I didn’t expect to win. I truly believed I gave the worst speech of my life,” he said. But thanks to his mentor and coach, he was told to calm down and believe in his abilities.

His win sends him to Australia and makes him the first pupil from an ex-model C school to be part of the world championships and the first in his school to win nationals as well as compete in the world event twice if he makes it to Australia. “It’s a humbling moment for me. It goes to show through hard work, dedication and having a set goal in mind, anything is possible,” he added.

The trip to Sydney will be another costly affair for him as he was told it would cost roughly R40,000 for him to spend a week there from Friday, 7 April to Thursday, 13 April.

Matt’s mother, Tracey Cairns would love to see her child travel overseas again but will not be able to afford the trip. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for him and I encourage him to grab it with both hands. I once again, ask for help from the community to help my son reach another goal. We are so grateful for the support we received for his American adventures and hopefully, your kindness will help see Matt visit Australia,” said Tracey.

To help Matt go to Australia contact Tracey Cairns on 072-997-2317 for further details.
