JUST IN: Robot thieves pull off brazen R25-million cash heist

A guard inside the armoured vehicle had a close call when two men pointed guns at his head

TWENTY-FIVE million rand was stolen in a cash transit heist on Sunday, 25 September on the corner of South Coast and Blamey Road in Mobeni.

A guard inside the armoured vehicle had a close call when two men pointed guns at his head. “The vehicle was stationary at the robots on South Coast Road. The man was at the back of the van when two armed men aged between 25 and 28 years jumped into the vehicle,” said Montclair SAPS communication officer, Capt Dereck Vijiam.

The driver continued on his route without knowledge of what was happening at the back. With guns still pointed at the guard’s face, the men demanded he hand over his firearms and tell the driver to open a safe.

The brazen criminals filled their bags with cash and waited for the driver, who had driven to Cato Manor by then, to stop. They both jumped out with R25-million in hand and ran away.

Fortunately, no shots were fired and no-one was hurt. “The men can be identified if seen. Durban Central OCI has taken over the dockets,” added Cpt Vijiam.
