Community cleans up YWP river

Thanks to social media, the word for the clean-up spread and a number of people turned up.

DETERMINED to keep Yellowwood Park clean, a group of people from the area spent their Sunday, 11 September  cleaning up  Stainbank river near the Coedmore bridge.

The team gathered at the Coedmore Avenue bridge where they were geared up with gloves and bags.

The initiative was started by Justin Goodwin, a gardener from Garden Fundi. Although he does not live in the area, he travels on the bridge every day to work in Yellowwood Park. “I was sick and tired of seeing the state of the river. It was horribly polluted and I felt like something needed to be done. I got hold of some people and we got it done. I do wish more people would pull their weight and help keep their communities clean. At the end of the day we all live on the same earth and this is our home,” said Goodwin.

Thanks to social media, the word for the clean-up spread and a number of people turned up. The area from Old Mill Way to the river and both banks of the river from the Stainbank Nature reserve boundary to downstream of the bridge were cleaned. Goodwin used his two-ton bakkie to cart two loads of rubbish to the Bellair Road garden refuse site.”It was inspiring to see the community come together to take ownership of their area. This is the kind of community spirit that fights the ‘broken window syndrome’ that not only degrades the standard of our area but creates a breeding ground for criminals,” said ward 64 councillor, Gavin Hegter.
