Geyser thief lands in hot water

Local security company spots thief twice in a row.

A THIEF, who had been spotted twice in three days on the Bluff by the same reaction unit members, was arrested on Tuesday, 7 September.

On Sunday, 4 September two men were seen walking on Lighthouse Road carrying a geyser and were stopped by Security Force reaction unit officers Louis Le Roux and Richard Meth.

According to Brighton Beach SAPS media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux, ownership could not be proved nor could it be ascertained that the geyser was stolen, so the men were set free.

“Shortly thereafter a man arrived at the community service centre of Brighton Beach police station to report that his geyser had been stolen. The reaction unit officers were informed and they began combing the area for the two men without success.

On Tuesday, 7 September the reaction unit officers were on patrol when they entered a premises that was being broken into, along Doon Road. They found a man breaking glass from an aluminium door frame which he was holding in his hand, with another one lying alongside him with the glass already removed.

The reaction unit officer realised the man in their presence was one of the men they had stopped along Lighthouse Road, carrying the stolen geyser,” said Capt Le Roux.

The man was arrested and charged with two counts of theft while efforts to find the second man are ongoing.

“It is believed the man is involved in another case of business breaking in October 2015 in Jacobs, where a laptop, jigsaw, drill and clothing items were taken. He was identified through facial recognition. Fingerprint confirmation is awaited.

Brighton Beach SAPS management congratulates Le Roux and Meth for linking the man to the two cases of theft and the recovery of stolen items.”
