Armed thieves prey on motorists, pedestrians

If you find yourself in a robbery situation, try not to resist but take in every detail of the person such as unique scars or tattoos

MOTORISTS are urged to be vigilant while stationary at robots or walking on the streets in the wake of the recent spate of armed robberies in the South Coast, Mobeni and Montclair areas.

In August, a man who was waiting for transport on the corner of Higginson Highway and the N2 freeway, Mobeni. was accosted by four armed men.
The men, who alighted from a white vehicle, first introduced themselves as police officers. One of the so-called officers produced a firearm and cocked it, pointing it at the man. At gunpoint, the other man searched him and took his victim’s private firearm. The four fled in their vehicle.

A truck driver had rice worth R75,000 stolen from his truck when two armed robbers pointed guns at him and his assistant, while they were stationary at the robots at the South Coast and Grimsby road intersection. According to the driver, one of the assailants came to his side and pointed a gun at him while the other pushed his assistant to the back. “They covered both their heads with their jackets but they could hear the roller door opening and the thieves offloading the cargo,” said Montclair SAPS communication officer, Cpt Dereck Vijiam. The rice thieves told the blinded victims to count to 50 before uncovering their heads. They were gone and the truck was parked on the roadside.

A pedestrian became the victim of a crime when she felt something brush against her neck while walking on Blamey Road, Montclair.
It turned out to be a gun being pointed at her by a robber, who demanded her wallet and cellphone. “We encourage pedestrians to walk in group and always walk in well-lit and visible areas. Be more alert. Drivers must close their windows when coming to a stop, also lock doors. If you find yourself in a robbery situation, try not to resist but take in every detail of the person such as unique scars or tattoos. Stay calm and stay alive,” said Cpt Vijiam.
