Dumping of toxic waste into ocean under spotlight

Local organisation will speak to the community about the potential pollutants in the sea.

THE South Durban Community Environmental Alliance hosts a public meeting tomorrow, 8 September to discuss the dumping of millions of litres of toxic waste into the ocean.

According to a statement released by the organisation, the waste will be dumped at sea near Cuttings.

“Durban Solid Waste has authorised 27-million litres of highly toxic liquid waste (leachate) from the Shongweni hazardous landfill site to be dumped to sea through the Southern Wastewater Works marine pipeline outfall in the next three months.
Con-currently, 3.5-million litres is dumped every month from Wasteman’s Bulbul landfill site through Southern Wastewater Work’s marine pipeline outfall.”

The meeting will be held at City of Love Ministries (96 Rawalpindi Road, Merebank) from 6pm on Thursday, 8 September.
