Wildlife centre now has security to crow about

Security features will add to the security following a break in at the centre.

YELLOWWOOD Park’s Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) recently received a donation of security products following a break-in at its clinic facility.

Paul Hoyte, director of CROW, said that, fortunately only the donation box was taken during the burglary but the incident raised serious concerns about the security of the clinic area which houses valuable equipment and, more importantly, wildlife patients undergoing high-care treatment.

“In hindsight, we realised how easily accessible the centre is and how exposed we’ve left ourselves to criminal incidents. A decision was made to increase security immediately to safeguard our facilities, staff and wildlife and this led us to contacting Maxidor.”

The company made a donation of five Maxidor Expandable barriers for the clinic area. Jurie Botha, Maxidor chief operating officer, said security is often the biggest concern for non-profit organisations such as CROW.

“Due to a lack of adequate security systems, these organisations are often soft targets for criminals who have no qualms making off with whatever they can lay their hands on – mostly expensive equipment and funds without which the organisation cannot function. Maxidor was very happy to help CROW safeguard the infrastructure they rely on to operate efficiently.”

Founded over 36 years ago, CROW is still KZN’s only registered rehabilitation centre dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of all indigenous wildlife. Every year, over 3,000 injured, orphaned and displaced animals receive life-saving care and treatment at CROW before they are returned to the wild.

“CROW relies solely on the support of the public and it is only through the generosity of companies like Maxidor that we are able to continue our important work. We’d like to say a heartfelt thanks to Maxidor for helping us to give wild animals in distress a second chance,” concluded Hoyte.
