SDB team hosts waterwise displays at expo

The SDB ABM put on a display related to water harvesting and conservation in a bid to create awareness of the current drought situation in KZN

THE Sustainable Living exhibition saw a host of waterwise displays from the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office, with youngsters making a pledge to themselves and their communities.

The SDB ABM team attended the seventh annual Sustainable Living exhibition and Botsoc Plant Fair at the ICC Durban Exhibition Centre from Friday to Sunday, 19 to 21 August.

“There are many initiatives being implemented by various organisations and individuals who contribute towards sustainable development and livelihoods within the municipality. However they are not well profiled so as to inspire action by masses.

The Sustainable Living Exhibition aims to show such sustainability efforts, provide an opportune learning, sharing and networking experience to a broad section of the public and inspire action at individual or community level,” said the SDB ABM’s Sinenhlanhla Ntombela.

The SDB ABM put on a display related to water harvesting and conservation in a bid to create awareness of the current drought situation in KZN. Also, among the educational part of the display were methods for reusing waste to create products for beautifying or profit making. An example of this was the dolls’ house created by Clairwood Secondary School.

“The house also displayed just how water tanks can be beneficial to the community through rainwater storage for household use.

There was a buzz of excitement as people pledged their commitment to conserve water and use the tips to save water drawn from the very informative, fun and educational presentations conveyed by the SDB ABM team.

Young people were excited to participate in the water conservation word search competition and were enthralled by ‘Water Smurf’, who entertained and handed out water conservation materials to them.”

In conjunction with the expo, the SDB ABM launched its ‘New Generation New Future’ booklet on Saturday, 20 August. Included in this are dreams, aspirations, views and commitments from SDB youngsters.
