Vigilance pays off as stolen goods retrieved

A VIGILANT reaction unit officer recovered R120,000 in stolen goods on the Bluff on Saturday, 20 August.

While on patrol along Bluff Road, Security Force reaction unit officer, André Van Loggerenberg saw a man hauling multiple heavy backpacks. When the man spotted Van Loggerenberg, he made a beeline for the bushes in Hartlepool Road.

With knowledge of the area, the reaction unit officer expected the man to make his way along the nearby railway lines so he went ahead to an area he believed he could intercept him.

It wasn’t long until Van Loggerenberg found his target, who was walking towards him with a second man. He also saw three others putting objects into backpacks. When the three saw him they rushed at him, but when they saw him draw his gun, they fled along the railway line.

Following a short pursuit, Van Loggerenberg caught the other two men. However, as he was walking them, along with the suspected stolen goods out of the bushes, one man managed to break loose and run away.

Investigations revealed the recovered items, valued at about R120,000, were stolen from a business in Bayhead.

The arrested man, a 54-year-old from Isipingo, was charged with being in possession of stolen items.
