Pupils shine in art, literacy competition

Winning pupils were presented with a certificate of achievement

FOUR local pupils were awarded top prizes in the Brighton Beach SAPS’ bullying awareness art competition.

“Through creative writing and art, children have an opportunity to express their emotions and experiences,” said Brighton Beach SAPS media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

During Child Protection Month, the station hosted a creative arts and writing competition as part of the anti-school bullying campaign, which saw 1,703 pupils from eight schools take part.

Grade 4 to 7 pupils were tasked with making a poster, with the winner being Tylin Joubert from Van Riebeeck Park Senior Primary School. Grade 8s had to produce a collage, with Durban Academy’s Siphokazi Cele coming out tops. Durban Academy had a second winner in Lona Ntshangase in the grade 9 poem category. The final group of grades 10 to 12 wrote an essay, with Akshaay Manger from Kenmont School winning the prize.

At an awards ceremony at Brighton Beach SAPS’ conference room, the winning pupils were presented with a certificate of achievement from station commander, Colonel Carel Grobler and a Mr Price clothing voucher sponsored by Park Patrol Security Services.

“Congratulations to the winners – you have done your schools proud. Brighton Beach SAPS management thanks Park Patrol Security for their involvement in another safer-school child protection programme and for sponsoring the prizes,” said media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

The principals and teachers who supported the initiative and pupils who participated are thanked and Brighton Beach SAPS management acknowledges Capt Le Roux for her role in creating the competition.

“We encourage educational facilities to join forces with the SAPS when initiatives such as these are launched to condition pupils on their personal safety and an opportunity is created for them to express themselves through visual art and literacy,” concluded Capt Le Roux.
