JUST IN: City to shut South Durban taps overnight

Once the level of the supply dams has returned to a safe level, water supply will return to normal.

DURBAN South resident have advised water restrictions will start from today, 11 August from 9pm to 4am every day.

Affected areas include

  • Wentworth
  • Montclair
  • Yellowwood Park
  • Umbilo
  • Bayhead
  • Sea View and Coedmore
  • Fynnlands
  • Ocean View
  • Rossburgh
  • Grosvenor
  • Clairwood
  • Havenside
  • Bayview
  • Jacobs
  • Brighton Beach
  • Lamontville
  • Mobeni
  • Austerville
  • Merewent
  • Stanvac
  • Merebank East and other parts of Durban.

This follows the persistent droughts in KZN which is drying up the dams that provides millions of homes with the precious resource. eThekwini is reducing the supply of portable water to all affected areas to prolong the available storage of water and ensure that taps don’t run dry. The purpose of water restrictions is to stabilise the Wiggins supply system. The city is currently installing water restrictors, reducing the flow and pressure as well as implementing planned restrictions.

According to the municipality, the frequent draining and filling of the water supply system have resulted in prolonged interruptions as well as repeated bursts to the water mains in different areas. These interventions will help to stabilise the water supply system and control the outflow from the reservoirs.

Their intention is to provide residents with an uninterrupted supply once they have reached the goal of saving 5%. They urge residents to continue using water sparingly and adopt internal water saving and re-use techniques. With the communities help, they are positive they will be able to conserve and prolong the precious dwindling water reserves during this difficult time. Once the level of the supply dams has returned to a safe level, water supply will return to normal.

Water saving tips:

  1. Read your water meter regularly
  2. Check that your toilet is not leaking or overflowing
  3. Collect water from the shower and use it to flushing the toilets
  4. Have a two-minute shower by turning the water off while you soap yourself
  5. Re-use water. Grey water (water used for another household purpose that can be re-used) can be used for a number of purposed such as watering the garden;
  6. Don’t flush the toilet unnecessarily as the toilet uses about six litres of water every time you flush.
  7. Fix leaking taps or report them immediately. A dripping tap (one drop per second) wastes up to 30 litres of water an hour.
