DA wins three out of five South Durban wards

The results of the local government elections, held on Wednesday, 3 August, are slowly coming in.

THE results of the 2016 local government elections are nearly finalised, with the DA winning three out of five of South Durban’s wards and the ANC winning the remaining two.

According to the IEC website, ward 32 which includes Clairwood, Bayhead and the Durban Harbour, saw the ANC’s Mpumelelo Bukhosibezwe Romeo Zuma win with 64.36% of the votes, ahead of the IFP’s Mthembiseni Emmanuel Thusi with 13.58% and the DA’s Thulani Mgonyama with 12.29%.

In ward 64 (the Montclair, Yellowwood Park and Woodlands ward), Gavin James Hegter takes the reigns as councillor for the DA from the outgoing Billie Prinsloo after the party won 53.32% of the votes. The ANC’s Thembela Faith Ntlauzana came in second with 39.28%, followed by the EFF’s Slindile Cherity Ngcobo with 2.56%.

Jean-Pierre Prinsloo of the DA is the new ward councillor for ward 66, the greater Bluff area, with a total of 81.64% of the votes, followed by Petronella Nichols of the ANC and IRASA’s Ivor Aylward with 12.33% and 1.6% of the votes respectively.

Ward 68, Wentworth, will be continue to be headed by councillor Aubrey Desmond Snyman, who garnered 72.97% of the votes. Myrtle Monica Beaunoir of the ANC collected 13.38% of the votes and in third is Yusuf Amod Vawda of the IFP with 5.19%.

And finally, in ward 75, which includes Clairwoodand Park and Mobeni, the ANC got 63.79% of the vote, making Eunice Sibongile Khanyile the ward councillor, ahead of independent candidate, Thamsanqa Ndlovu with 14.68% and the IFP‘s Skhulu Phiwayinkosi Gasa with 10.33%.

However, no results are showing on the IEC site for ward 32’s Baxter Park voting station; ward 64’s Montclair Senior Primary School voting station; ward 66’s Durban Academy and Transhaven Seaside voting stations and ward 75’s Ganges Secondary School.

Councillors Snyman, Hegter and Prinsloo have all confirmed the results for their areas and have declared victory in their wards.

The ANC are currently sitting on 53.38% of the vote for eThekwini, followed by the DA with 30.35% and the IFP with 3.82% as results continue to come in. As it currently stands, the ANC has just over 56% of the KZN vote, the IFP has about 20% and the DA is just short of 15%.
