Lone man inspires a community bridge clean-up

Community spirit was alive and was felt throughout Yellowwood Park

YELLOWWOOD Park residents have taken matters into their own hands after heavy rains flooded the Coedmore bridge earlier this week.

A group of good Samaritans followed the example of an unknown man who was seen shoveling heaps of sand by himself.

Those who saw him commended him for taking action and soon after, a group of young men gathered at the bridge and began toiling away at the thick mud as well.Gavin Hegter, who were among the diggers said it was humbling to see people band together to help each other make their community a better and neater place. “Huge thanks to the man who started the clean-up. Unfortunately, he left before we got there. A great thank you goes out to John Quail, Quintin Hegter, Byron Ertekes and Alister Worthington for working tirelessly to remove the mud,” said Hegter.

Community spirit was alive and was felt throughout Yellowwood Park. A passerby, Mel Venter said she was taking a drive when she saw the elderly man shoveling the sand. “I took a drive in the area to see the damage caused by the rain. We came across an elderly resident who was cleaning up the bridge by himself. We stopped and chatted to him and I posted on the community groups asking for anyone to assist him. That set the ball rolling and people came to assist. It’s so wonderful to see community members help each other and hats off to the gentleman who tried doing it himself. I admire you,” she said.

YWP Conservancy Chairman, Colin Vermaak who brought refreshments and Chris Tomlinson from Park Patrol who assisted with traffic control were thanked by the diggers and motorists using the bridge.
