VIDEO: Storm erodes Bluff beaches

Local beaches were hit hard by the storm.

THE severe storm that hit South Durban yesterday, 26 July caused further damage to the beaches, with landslides and a four metre trench forming on Garvies Beach at the end of Sloane Road.

Heavy rains caused damage throughout Durban, with fields and roads flooded, homes damaged and mudslides cascading down hills.

The already-damaged Garvies Beach was hard hit. The roadway crumbled into a trench about four metres deep, which stretches the breadth of the beach into the ocean. The chasm has exposed an underground concrete pipe which subsequently cracked.

At Ansteys, there was also erosion. The lack of grass meant there was little support for the area and small trenches dotted the landscape, with debris from broken paving and pipes exposed.

All along Foreshore Drive, minor landslides could be seen with the outgoing lane completely blocked in some areas.
