Cell shop owner assaulted as armed gang strikes

His cousin was hit in the head with a stick.

ARMED with weapons, eight men rushed into a mobile phone shop on Brighton Road on Saturday, 23 July, injuring one man and making off with R9,000 in goods.

While screaming at the owner and his cousin, the men armed with knives and a stick entered the shop on the rainy afternoon.

One of them moved behind the counter and struggled with the owner, who kept pushing him away. His cousin, was hit in the head with a stick.

The men left the shop with R4,000 in cash and mobile phones.

Brighton Beach trio crime detective pair Warrant Officers Marius Van Der Looy and Grobler and Metro Dog Unit’s Warrant Officer Shaun Jooste were called in.

Armed with a description of the thieves, they started a search. Pedestrians were able to give them a clue about the whereabouts of two of the men.

They were found sitting in a room of a business in Stableford Road, along with R2,000 cash and three mobile devices.

Through IMEI numbers, the police were able to confirm the items were those stolen during the robbery and the two 18-year-olds were arrested.

They are expected to appear in Durban Regional Court on Tuesday, 26 July.

W/O Van Der Looy said the arrest of the outstanding assailants is imminent.

“Brighton Beach management commends W/Os Van Der Looy, Grobler and Jooste for tracking the two perpetrators and the recovery of some of the stolen items. The perseverance by the three members has once again showcased that together more can be achieved in bringing perpetrators before a court of law to be held accountable for their criminal acts,” said media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.
