Deluge sees SUV burn out on congested N2

Weather causes chaos on the roads.

THE weather turned the roads into chaos yesterday as areas flooded, forcing large amounts of traffic onto already congested roads.

At the M4 split from the N2 near the old airport, the road was completely flooded, with trucks and cars stuck in water which was chest high in some places.
An SUV caught alight and completely burnt out at about 7.40pm on the same stretch of the N2.

Motorists complained that police were walking up and down the road but nothing was done to divert traffic or inform drivers that the road was impassable.

Multiple cars broke down, overheated or were damaged by high water levels throughout the province. Motorist spent hours trying to get home as traffic came to a standstill in many areas. Some users of public transport elected to get out and walk instead.

According to a Durban rainfall measuring website, the Bluff had about 114mm of rain from 8am on Saturday, 23 July to the same time this morning, 26 July.

Weather SA predicts an 80% chance of rain today, and flood warnings have been issued for multiple areas, including eThekwini. According to the site, the probability of rain drops dramatically tomorrow, down to 30%.
