Ex-police captain gets 10 years for shooting

A fight that led to a shooting sent this former policeman to jail.

FORMER police captain, Larry Heslop was sentenced to 10 years in prison at the Durban Regional Court on Wednesday, 20 July for the 2015 shooting of another man at a Wentworth petrol station.

The 45-year-old shot and badly injured a 40-year-old man during an altercation on 6 September 2015.

After months of searching, the police were able to track him down and arrest him in possession of an unlicensed firearm with live rounds. He was charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Along with the 10 year sentence, Heslop was given an additional five years in prison for the firearm possession charge. An internal investigation also led to his dismissal from the SAPS.

In a separate investigation, Heslop was also arrested earlier this year for the New Year’s day shooting of a man on Bluff Road. He was granted R10,000 bail by the Durban Regional Court on Wednesday, 14 January and was ordered to report to Brighton Beach police station every Monday to sign the bail conditions register.

“The accused proved he did not belong to the SAPS by committing criminal activities and fleeing after the incident. He should have been an example since he was part of the SAPS management but he proved to be worse than his juniors. Such police officers cannot be kept within the service and they deserve to be expelled,” said KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa.
