Drummer returns home to teach youth

RECORD-breaking drummer, Joe Fynn has returned to Wentworth to inspire and motivate the youth by using his skills and expertise in drumming.

He held a free workshop on 14 and 15 July where he invited the community to learn and experience drumming.
Setting the South African record for 94 hours of non-stop drumming in 1983, Fynn has become a household name after playing alongside musical legends like South African singer-songwriter and guitarist, Jonathan Butler.

When he is not breaking records and rubbing shoulders with South Africa’s finest musos, Fynn is giving back to the community by raising money for cancer organisations. “I do a lot of workshops for school children and shows to raise funds for cancer,” said Fynn.

The former Wentworth drummer, who now lives in Cape Town, started drumming at the age of nine, when he developed a sharp sense for music.

“I started banging on cardboard, imitating the music that I listened to. I grew my passion from it and I want to instill that same passion in the youth of Wentworth. I want to teach them that drums are easy to learn and playing music has the possibility to get you far in life,” he said.

Through drumming, a youngster is exposed to life lessons such as discipline. “As a musician, you have to be disciplined and have great passion. It’s about practising every chance you get.

You will learn to be generous, especially when you are part of a band. You play generously so every instrument and voice is heard,” he added.

A close friend who helped him with the Wentworth workshop said he had watched the drummer play for many years, when he was part of a band called Wild Things. “He is a brilliant drummer and I’m very proud of everything he has achieved, especially in his work to teach the youth. His patience and passion make him a great teacher,” he said.
