Mandela Day blood donations urged

Help save lives during your 67 minutes.

USE your Mandela Day minutes to donate blood at the Southway Mall South African National Blood Service office and help save lives.

On Monday, 18 July the world celebrates Mandela Day by giving up 67 minutes to improve the lives of others.

“Nelson Mandela Day is a philanthropic occasion that challenges people the world over and reminds them that it is ‘time to serve’ and not just on 18 July,” said SANBS Durban public relations practitioner, Mohamed Chan Goolam.

He hopes this culture of making a difference will continue throughout the year through people donating blood regularly.

“Although the SANBS currently collects over one million units of blood annually at its 87 fixed donor centres and through daily blood drives managed by 100 mobile teams, there are instances when we fall short of the 3,000 units of blood required to meet daily demand and this greatly impacts on the lives of patients.

Currently the blood reserves are low and since it is Nelson Mandela Day, we would like to inspire the public to choose blood donations as their continued act of kindness.

There is no better way to honour the life and spirit of a man who epitomised the precious value of life than to donate blood and save the lives of accident victims, mothers in labour, cancer patients and thousands others.”

Blood donors must weigh at least 50kg, be aged from 16 to 65, lead a sexually safe lifestyle and be in good health. Donors who visit the Southway Mall clinic from 9am to 5pm on 18 July will be given a token of appreciation.
