Wheelchair dancers add talents to dance festival

"This will be the first of its kind to emerge out of Wentworth, something positive to radiate into the community," added Watson.

THE fourth Durban Dance Movement (DDM) festival is back but with an exciting twist.

Hosted by NGO, Wentworth Arts and Culture organisation, the festival promises electric performances by talented young dancers in styles ranging from ballet, hip hip, contemporary to break dancing, African and kwaito style.

The festival will be staged at the Playhouse Drama Theatre on Saturday, 16 July. “This year the festival offers some unique dance creations and I must say that I’m very impressed with the development and the growth of dancing in our province. I’m proud to say this festival is the platform that exposes the amazing talent and skill of these dancers,” said artistic director, Jarryd Watson.

Not only is the festival a special moment for dancers to shine but the Dance Movement professional youth company will be launched with a spectacular performance collaboration between Dance Movement and three disabled dancers. The six young dancers, Sherwin Green, Ashlee Koekemoer, Lindsley Augustine, Arlene Usher, Nathan Roux and Talisa Cornwall boast a multitude of talents. Three wheelchair dancers who were brought together by Watson add a flare and a sense of awe as they go beyond their disabilities to prove to the world that they can and will dance.

“This has been such an exciting challenge for me and my dancers who have never performed with wheelchair dancers before, but the every single time we rehearse with them, I just feed off them. It heightens my creativity and everything I ask them to do, they do with such ease and makes the choreography effortless. Durban audiences are in for a treat and something different,” said Watson.

“This will be the first of its kind to emerge out of Wentworth, something positive to radiate into the community,” added Watson.

Other groups from around Durban Like 031 Floor Assassins, Foot worx , Spring wood and Penny Spanish dancers among others will perform at the festival. ”

Shows are from 2pm – junior showcase, 4pm – senior showcase and 7.30pm – professional showcase. For more information contact Jared Watson on 082-683-9665.
