[PHOTOS] House fire panics South Durban residents

House burns to the ground but no injuries were reported.

A HOUSE burnt down in Clairwood on Thursday, 30 June, sending a plume of smoke high into the air, causing panic among South Durbanites who also reported hearing an explosion.

At about 5.25pm a house caught fire in Ambar Road in Clairwood.

Security Force K9 unit members Kival Singh, Andre van Loggerenberg and Craig Coldron responded to the scene.

Coldron said the fire department arrived within minutes while they assisted with evacuating people from the area.

“While the firefighters were extinguishing the flames, a gas cylinder exploded. Luckily nobody was injured when the explosion happened,” said Coldron.

This was the sound heard across the South Durban Basin, which saw concerned residents take to social media to ask what was going on. The smoke trailed across the sky for over an hour, as the firefighters fought the inferno.

Brighton Beach SAPS officers blocked off access to the area to ensure the safety of road users and locals. The effort of the firefighters saw the blaze extinguished in less than two hours with no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
