Film-maker (13) encourages youth to join club

The teenager started a club called Weirdo Club Film where he invites youth from the area to come and learn about film-making.

WHAT started as a fun film-making project three years ago with friends has turned into an undying passion for 13-year-old Reece Bayley.

The Montclair resident started out using just a camera to make random videos but later discovered the art of stop-motion. He began to fiddle with this form of film-making, using YouTube videos and experience as a self-learning tool. With new techniques and a greater passion, Bayley founded Weirdo Productions. “Weird to me is normal and being normal is weird. I was never interested in sports like ‘normal’ boys. I would rather create a new world through my films,” he said.

His new interest in film-making is animation which he practises with the Microsoft programme, Moviemaker, but it doesn’t give him the quality he wants. “If I had Cinema 4D then I would be making real magic. But the programme is costly so I will have to make do with what I have.”

The school boy spoke excitedly about film-making and the big dreams he has for his future. His passion for the craft has honed him into an intelligent young man, with a wisdom beyond his years as all knowledge he has gained was self-taught. His mother, Pat Bayley is inspired by her son’s enthusiasm. She describes him as motivated, strong-willed and creative. “He has great patience and endurance. I think it’s important for him to follow his passion. God has given him a gift and I always encourage him to use this gift to give back to the community. He has the ability to change lives,” she enthused.

Taking his mother’s advice to heart, the teenager started a club called Weirdo Club Film where he invites youth from the area to come and learn about film-making. “I want to share my love that I get from film-making, so I invite anyone who is enthusiastic about films and wants to learn. I want them to feel comfortable and most of all, be weird and be free as who they are at my club,” said Bayley.
