Youth’s writing to feature in creative journal

The goal was to encourage creative thinking among youth groups

WRITING for their futures, local youngsters were invited by the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office to participate in workshops and ultimately create a journal that profiles their writing and editing skills.

In partnership with Africa Ignite, the SDB ABM members hosted three workshops for the youths to provide them with the necessary skills to become employable editors and writers and to inspire them to become involved in their communities.

The culmination of the workshops led to the creation of a journal by the participants which will act as a starting point for their careers.

“This journal will be a compilation of articles written by young youth actively involved in the SDB area, particularly the Smart-Teens and the Youth PHARE Leadership team,” said SDB ABM’s Snenhlanhla Ntombela.

Colleague, Tankiso Ntetha added that the goal was to encourage creative thinking among youth groups and to inspire them to develop advocacy activities and awareness-raising initiatives.

“The SDB youth have done a lot of work that now needs to be published by the youth for the youth. The final product will be a print-ready publication that is professionally written, edited and laid-out, and will capture the creative input of youths.

The publication will portray the principles and positive messages of the Smart-Teens and the youth within the community and schools through the Life Journal Publication Programme in a creative and inspiring way,” said SDB ABM co-ordinator, Anitha Govender.

Youngsters who were part of the Smart Teens Programme and youth leadership programmes are invited to participate in the ongoing youth publication project. Contact Anitha on 031-451-9800 or email her at Anitha.governder@durban.gov.za or email Tankiso on Tankiso.Ntetha@durban.gov.za.
