IN a bid to create rolemodels to guide future generations, the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office hosted a proud parenting workshop from 9 to 10 June at the Wentworth Child Welfare office.
“Our objectives were to identify parents who need empowerment and education to become better parents and role models to their children, households and community,” said SDB ABM co-ordinator, Anitha Govender.
All the parents who attended were given certificates of participation and a sense of confidence in their ability to make a difference in their communities.
“My expectation after this workshop is to be a better parent as well as to be able to understand my children’s needs. This programme has empowered me to take this information and train other parents within my ward. I would like to thank the SDB ABM for giving us this opportunity,” said Helping Hands’ Sharin Rajman.
The importance of parents was stressed by Child Welfare social worker, Bongiwe Nxumalo, who daily witnesses the effects of parenting problems.
“We do community programmes to help parents understand their children more and in doing so, we face lots of challenges regarding parenting issues. Poor parenting skills lead to broken homes, therefore I emphasise the importance of parents’ roles in children’s lives,” said Nxumalo.
