Four policemen jailed for torture, extortion

Umlazi officers forced a man to give them money after they picked him up in Clairwood.

FOUR police officers who allegedly tortured a man for R8,000 were arrested by Brighton Beach SAPS officers on Friday, 17 June.

A man, who claims he was giving food to needy people in Sastri Road, Clairwood, alleges he was approached by four men in a Volkswagen Caddy with Umlazi Tactical Response Team (TRT) signage on it on Wednesday, 8 June.

He said the officers forced him into their car and drove him to Isipingo police station where they demanded money from him. When he refused and said he had no money, the officers allegedly put a plastic bag over his head and suffocated him.

After a few moments they removed the bag and he agreed to go with them to withdraw money. They took him to a bank in Montclair where he withdraw R8,000 and handed it over to them.

An investigation team headed by Brighton Beach SAPS detective head, Lieutenant Colonel Jayson McGray arrested the four men on Friday, 17 June on charges of kidnapping, assault with grievous bodily harm, extortion and theft.

Warrant Officer Marius Van Der Looy will oppose the bail application.
