Police concerned by complacency

We appeal to home owners to use the safety features fitted to all doors and windows at all times

HOME safety is a growing concern for Brighton Beach SAPS as they note people are not doing enough to secure their houses and loved ones.

According to media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux, recent operational activities have shown complacent attitudes of several home owners and tenants in regards to their homes.

“We have found front yard gates wide open and front and back doors including some gates unlocked and open. We appeal to home owners to use the safety features fitted to all doors and windows at all times,” said Capt Le Roux.

“As the exam period has commenced, we also found several children left unattended at home. Parents, guardians and caregivers must create a sense of responsibility in their children to ensure they close all windows and lock front and back doors and gates when exiting the home. Upon returning from school they should ensure the same safety procedures are applied.”

She also urges people to activate alarm systems when leaving the home and ensure keys are not placed under door mats, pot plants or on a key rack visible from any door.

“Keys should be placed inside a drawer as they can be easily hooked and removed to gain access. Domestic workers should also be mentored on how to apply the safety features when they leave the premises and return.”
