School brings winter warmth to NGO

WINTER has arrived and many South Africans will not know the comfort of a warm blanket.

A group of teachers with their 55 prefects from Wentworth Secondary School are set to change this with their initiative, Winter Warmth.

The initiative was started by Rocklyn Gous, a teacher who believed it was the perfect way to educate the pupils about the importance of giving and how a simple act of kindness can change a life. “I saw a dire need in the community and I banded together all the prefects. With the help of my colleague Nicolette Larsen and principal Fay Lamalette, we assigned each prefect to a class,” said Gous. The prefects went to the classes and encouraged the pupils through a motivational speech about the importance of giving through charity.

The pupils responded so well that they managed to collect a few hundred items of canned foods, soups to distribute in the community and blankets. “The blankets were washed and given to an NGO, Wentworth Angels whom we have adopted. We felt this NGO was imperative in the community. It is so heartwarming to see these children react to our initiative, it is a way forward for our community,” he said.

NGO founder, Tracey Williams thanked the teachers for instilling community spirit into the youth. “This came as a surprise to me, as the previous night I put a plea out on social networks requesting assistance and kept the faith that God would come through for the organisation,” said Williams.

Mr Gous, who will be leaving for Saudi in September and has started this remarkable campaign, hopes that other schools and businesses will take this as a challenge to assist the community. “Together we can make a difference, so I challenge other schools to become part of the solution by creating your own initiative,” added Gous.
