Red robot thieves pilfer products from trucks

Truck theft has become an increasing issue in the area

TRUCK theft has become an increasing problem for Montclair SAPS with more and more incidents occurring in the station’s policing vicinity.

On Thursday, 9 June a truck loaded with sugar fell victim to stealthy criminals who used the advantage of a red robot to steal the goods while the vehicle was stationary. They made a quiet getaway without any suspicions raised.

The driver only realised the theft when he stopped at Huletts and checked his load. “He found the tarpaulin has been cut and eight 25kg bags of sugar was missing. Luckily the sugar is insured,” said Montclair SAPS communication officer, Lt Dereck Vijiam.

In another case on Monday, 13 June, two Bosch batteries were stolen from a truck which was parked on the side of the road in Clairwood.

The driver who locked the vehicle was away from the truck when unknown suspects interfered with it and stole the batteries from the back.

On the same day at about 7.30pm on Swinton Road, a truck driver fell asleep inside his truck. The next morning he awoke to find  two truck tyres were missing. It is unknown how many people were involved in the theft. The tyres are estimated to be worth R40,000.

Lt Vijiam said truck theft has become an increasing issue in the area and warns truck drivers to be more vigilant and aware of their surroundings, especially when parked or stationary.
