Twenty ‘Adopt a Spot’ sites beautified

The campaign fits in well with the city’s vision of being Africa’s most caring and liveable city by 2030

UPWARDS of 20 sites were adopted this month by concerned South Durbanites in a bid to stamp out illegal dumping and beautify the environment in the recently launched ‘Adopt a Spot’ programme.

Community members, non-governmental organisations, co-operatives and businesses made a pledge to keep an area clean on Friday, 3 June in celebration of World Environment Day on Sunday, 5 June.

The programme, which was launched by the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office and Durban Solid Waste, aims to bring an end to illegal dumping, to keep the city’s roads and open spaces hazard-free and presentable.

For us to have a successful campaign we need all stakeholders to be on board

“For us to have a successful campaign we need all stakeholders to be on board to achieve a more co-ordinated and integrated approach coupled with individual commitment. The campaign fits in well with the city’s vision of being Africa’s most caring and liveable city by 2030. If we intensify these campaigns, we will yield positive results in our communities,” said councillor Brandon Pillay on behalf of the mayor.

“Our youth is committed to ensuring we have a sustainable future and lead by example by taking action,” said Buyani Ndlovu, a member of youth organisation, Future Leaders of Change which adopted a site in Umbogintwini.
